In July of 2012, it was said that the next game in the Batman: Arkham series would be a prequel based on the Silver Age of Comics, that involved more of DC Comics' heroes, such as Wonder Woman, Superman, and others. This game wouldn't be released until at least 2014 and would focus on the origins of Batman, such as his first meeting with The Joker.
It wasn't until February of 2013 that a new game in the Arkham series would be released in 2013, although Rocksteady Studios wouldn't be developing it. The game, titled Batman: Arkham Origins, was officially announced on April 9, 2013, with the developer at the helms being Warner Bros. Games Montréal, which worked on the Wii U port of Batman: Arkham City.
While Rocksteady provided some help with some of the technical and gameplay aspects, the plot for the game would be written completely by Warner Bros. Montreal, with M. Dooma Wendschuh and Corey May in charge and input from Geoff Johns. It was revealed that the plot would be a "Year Two" story of Batman, with inspiration being drawn from the Year One graphic novel, as well as the Legends of the Dark Knight comics.
There was some confusion over the voice actors for the game, as Kevin Conroy was initially revealed as not reprising his role as Batman, with Roger Craig Smith being announced in May of 2013 (as well as Troy Baker being the new voice of The Joker, as Mark Hamill retired from doing his voice). However, at the Comic Con in Dallas, Conroy said he was voicing Batman in the "next Arkham game," leading some to think it was Arkham Origins, but this was later revealed to not be the case.
