By the end of 2007, Sony had a sales forecast of around 6 million units for the PS3. However, only 3.68 million were sold, falling almost 2.5 million short of their expected sales. In the first year of sales, the PS3 had sold around 5 million units in Europe, with SCEE saying that the PS3 outsold the XBOX 360 from October 2007 to May 2008, although Microsoft disputed this fact. By the end of the 2007 fiscal year (March 2008), the PS3 had sold around 12.85 million units.
As of December 2012, the PS3 has sold over 70 million units worldwide.
