Trophies, which are similar to XBox 360's achievements, were introduced in 2008 with firmware update 2.40. Players could complete certain tasks in games and earn trophies of four possible types, which are bronze, silver, gold, and platinum, which is reserved for full retail games. At first, trophies were optional until Sony made it mandatory for all games released from January 2009 and onwards. Trophies are displayed on a user's profile screen, and users can compare trophies with other players.
