Artisans refer to Non Playable Characters who provide items for sale or assist the hero in providing trade. The artisans are introduced into the game after the protagonist completes a quest. Diablo III has two artisans: Haedrig Eamon the Blacksmith and Covetous Shen the Jeweler.
The Artisans can also be leveled up (up to a maximum level of 10) - at a fairly hefty cost in gold and Pages of Training - improving their skills, the appearance of their Wagons, and the crafting recipes that may offer to the player in the process. In this respect they act as one of the most important gold sinks within the game. The level of the player's Artisans is retained across all of his/her characters.
