Jeweler concept art.
Biography & Background:
The Jeweler, Covetous Shen, is the second of two Artisans the hero encounters in the game. He features around the midway point of Act 1, where the hero must rescue him from the lair of a murderous monster. Shen's greed knows no bounds, and his loyalty to the hero following his rescue owes more to the desire for personal wealth than anything else.
"The strangely-titled Covetous Shen has gone by many names throughout his history, but none have seemed to fit quite so well as the one he’s using now. Shen originally hails from the diamond isles of Xiansai, but his wanderlust has taken him far from home.
Covetous Shen is carefree by nature, giving every appearance of being a man without ambition, and trusting in fate to guide him to where he needs to be. Shen’s lax attitude only changes when jewels are involved. His greed for glittering precious stones is legendary; he may even love them more than he loves his own life.
When Shen joins you, he is searching for a particularly rare gem, one he suspects you may have an eventual hand in finding. Until his own quest is at an end, he will use his transcendent talent for jewelcrafting in your service, helping to cut and shape the gems that will elevate your weapons and armor to new heights of foe-destroying potential."[0]
Services:
Shen deals in precious jewelry, namely amulets, rings, and gems. His services include the ability to combine gems, add sockets to equipment, and remove gems from socketed items.
Combining Gems - Three gems of the same type can be combined into a single gem of a higher quality. There are currently 14 quality levels of gems in Diablo III, and only the lowest five are dropped from monsters, so players will have to make use of the Jeweler if they're to obtain the highest quality gems by themselves.
Adding Sockets - The Jeweler can also add sockets to helms, bracers, belts, shields, chest armor and amulets.
Removing Gems - Shen can also remove gems already socketed into items, without destroying either the item or the gem, allowing the player to both re-use gems and upgrade those gems that have been socketed. This is to encourage players to actually use lower level gems without sacrificing the ability to upgrade them at a later date.
Leveling:
The only service provided by the Jeweler which is affected by his leveling up is gem upgrading. Each level allows him to upgrades gems a further step, so that by level 10 - Exalted - he is able to create Star gems.
As with the Blacksmith, he is leveled up at the cost of gold and, in later levels, Pages of Training.
