The controller for the Xbox One is similar in appearance to the Xbox 360 controller, although it has functions the former doesn't have and introduces a number of improvements. For example, the triggers on the Xbox One controller are impulse triggers, meaning they will vibrate during the more action-oriented moments in games.
In addition, the D-pad for the controller has been changed from its previous iteration, modeling a new cross-shaped pattern that allows for easier motions during fighting games, something the 360's controller was criticized for. Also, the thumbsticks are smaller and more precise, requiring less force to move them.
It will still use batteries, although there are a few changes regarding that. The controller will go into a sleep mode, making it so the battery life is preserved. It can be connected to the console via mini-USB, where it can be used without batteries.
