The Nintendo Wii sold over 600,000 consoles in the first eight days of launch in the Americas. Including the sales of accessories and games, Nintendo's Wii-related revenue had hit $190 million in its first week.
The Wii launched in Japan on December 2, 2006 and an estimated 370,000 sold in two days, with Wii Sports and Wii Play being the top two selling games. The Wii software tie ratio was 1.69.
On December 12, 2006, sales data analysis firm Chart-Track and Nintendo confirmed that the Wii had become the fastest selling video game console in the United Kingdom's recorded history, selling 105,000 consoles in its opening weekend. Nintendo announced on the following day that the Wii had sold 325,000 units across Europe in its first two days of sale, making it the fastest selling console across the entire European continent.
The Wii also became the fastest selling console in Australian history with 32,901 units sold in four days.
Queues for retail stores stretched into back alleyways and side streets at launches in the United Kingdom, Japan and America, and many preorders remained unfulfilled due to a low stock inventory.
The top 3 selling stand-alone launch titles were: Wii Play, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and WarioWare: Smooth Moves with roughly 28, 6, and 2 million lifetime sales respectively.
The Wii went on to become the market leader amongst the seventh generation of consoles and although sales have dropped dramatically for the console towards the end of the generation it still maintains a lead over the competing PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles as of the last financial statements to be released, which put the Wii on 97.18 million units shipped, compared to 75.9 million for the Xbox 360 and 70.2 million for the PlayStation 3.
