Literary References
- The very first line of dialogue is from Pride & Prejudice. Classy.
Movie References
- Some of the Zin Empire’s soldiers look very similar to the alien hunter from Predator.
- In two clothing nods to the Karate Kid, the player can dress up as a Cobra-Kai student, or put on a Skeleton Halloween costume similar to the one used in the same film.
- Remember Apocalypse Now? The Saints do, their chopper ride is very similar at the state of the game.
- To quote, “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” moment from the apocalypse film Armageddon.
- Air Force One’s famous “Get off my plane!” gets switched. This time it’s “Get off my lawn!”
- Star Wars gets the love with costumes surprisingly similar to a Jedi Knight, Boba Fett, and Han Solo. Even the guns get Star Wars make-overs, with a Light Saber option.
- While in the giant simulation, there’s a reference to the Truman Show, with the control room hidden away in the sky above.
- The Matter Miller rescue is named “Zero Cool” which is itself a reference to the movie Hackers.
Gaming References
- The attack on the White House is oddly familiar to a classic video game. Is that Space Invaders?
- Minecraft is everywhere. One of the costumes is of the standard extremely low-poly player character.
- During the Matt Miller rescue, a theme very similar to Metroid will begin to play. Later, you’ll be given an arbitrary color-coded choice that will always lead to a bad outcome — a jab at the ending to Mass Effect 3.
- Continuing the Mass Effect theme, a sequence straight out of Mass Effect 2 plays out with the player leaping to an escape ship — only to survive thanks to Mass Effect voice actor Keith David.
- When you are doing doing the mission Where you get Asha, there is a part where you sneak in a box and when you die Asha yells "Boss!". Metal Gear Solid reference.
Television References
- The “walk and talk” sequence in the White House is very similar to any number of similar scenes from the White House drama the West Wing.
- One of the suits in character creation? Star Trek. A pair of glasses is also very similar to the visor from Next Generation’s chief engineer Geordi Laforge.
- Cartoon hero Rainbow Brite gets her own costume.
- The male voice (one of the three main options) will often quote Breaking Bad’s Walter White with this famous line, “I am the one who knocks.”
- Mal’s gun from the cult hit Firefly makes an appearance as a pistol customization choice.
- One of the hats looks very much like the super saiyan hair of Goku from Dragon Ball
- One of the cuztomization options allows you to use a phaser pistol from Star Trek: TOS
