The Last of Us is an action-adventure post-apocalyptic third-person survival horror game developed by Naughty Dog exclusively for the PlayStation 3. The game follows the story of Joel, a middle-aged black-marketeer, and Ellie, a brave teenage girl, as they work together to survive in cities reclaimed by nature, decimated by plague, and littered with gangs and other hostile survivors.
Two decades after a cordyceps-type fungus has infected millions, nature has gradually retaken the abandoned cities and towns. Survivors are hemmed inside quarantine zones, completely under the heel of the United States military, with order and screening for any infected being viciously maintained under martial law. Joel finds himself responsible for the young Ellie, whom he has promised an old friend he will get away from the harsh regime to a resistance group known as the Fireflies.

Story
Two decades after a cordyceps-type fungus has infected millions, systematically taking over their brains and turning them into The Infected, nature has gradually retaken the abandoned cities and towns. Survivors are hemmed inside quarantine zones, completely under the heel of the United States military, with order and screening for any infected being viciously maintained under martial law.
Gameplay
In The Last of Us, players take control of Joel, a texas construction worker, while Ellie is controlled by the AI. The gameplay features both weapon and melee combat with a cover system and dynamic stealth (in which is enemies react differently to the different strategies and techniques) action.
Equipment & Items
Joel carries a Flashlight at all times, which can be turned on by hitting R3, and an assortment of equipment that he scavenges through the game. Due to a limited backpack size, Joel can only carry a limited amount of ammo and have up to four things equipped and available quickly via the D-Pad:

Factions
Factions are the multiplayer element of The Last of Us. In factions, players choose a faction, Hunter or Firefly, and try to build up their clan and protect them from others.
Collectibles
The Last of Us is not short on collectibles and offers four different types. The following is a list of all the collectibles and their locations.
Optional Conversations
Optional Conversations are optional talk topics that Joel can have with those around him. These topics are indicated by a talk bubble over the object or person that the conversation is with/about. Approach the talk bubble and press Triangle to start the conversation.
Tags & Unlockables
Tags are objectives achieved during Story and Multiplayer Mode that earn you cash to purchase bonuses, such as Concept Art and Alternate Skins. Earning all Story Mode tags grants the player $12,500, which is enough to purchase all unlockables.

Development
Back in 2008, Neil Druckmann had an idea for a graphic novel based around a father-daughter zombie tale. He and game director Bruce Straley saw the cordyceps fungus segment of the BBC series Planet Earth, which turned into a major source of inspiration for The Last of Us's plot.
