Following the Treaty of Utrecht, Nassau was over-run by ex-privateers, eventually becoming the heart of a pirate republic.
“They tried to create their own democratic society,” says the game's director Ashraf Ismail, “but they were also pirates, so it failed in a really spectacular way.”
The pirates escape from Nassau when the British crush the pirate colony in 1718 is set to be a major set-piece within the game.
