Bombs are used to blow things up, which should be obvious, but they have a few other uses in Wind Waker. Before you get actual portable bombs, you will first gain access to them via Bomb Flowers on Dragon Roost Island. To get Bombs you can use anywhere, you have to wait until the second time you get onto Tetra's pirate ship, where you will be tested by Niko once again. Pass this test and your reward will be Bombs.
The bombs' primary use is to destroy obstacles in your way, such as rocks for example. When you're riding the King of Red Lions, equipping the Bombs slot will give the ship a cannon, which you can use to fire at enemy ships and other things while sailing.
