Metal Gear Ray was the successor to Metal Gear Rex and was prominantly featured in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. With the success of Metal Gear Rex by the US army, the US Marine Corps. decided to try their hand at it. Metal Gear Ray is a much improved model with a streamlined hull, joins that mimic muscles for increased flexibility and amphibious capabilities. It is heavily armored and while the original prototype was manned, it was originally designed to be an Unmanned Gear (UG).Metal Gear Ray was designed specifically to be a counter weapon to the raising prevelence of Metal Gear Rex. All versions sport a plasma cutter in their mouth as well as a heavy payload of rockets and anti-personal turrets. Unlike every other type of Gear before it, Ray does not carry Nuclear Warheads.
Metal Gear Ray pt. 1
Ray has several ranged attacks that he'll use against you. He'll jump away from you and try to hit you using turrets mounted all over his body and he may also fire homing rockets at the same time. Simply perform a Ninja Run to deflect these bullets and avoid the rockets at the same time. While shooting, it may also open its mouth and then shoot at you with a giant Plasma ray. This is avoided simply by running to the side.
The main points to attack are the feet. Start attacking the feet and after you lower the health of the feet a decent amount, you'll be prompted to use your Blade Mode to attack him. When you activate Blade Mode, Raiden will automatically jump to the proper point so that you can hack off the armor on this side of Ray. By repeating this process, you can also remove one of the turrets on this side. Repeat it on the other side to limit how much he can fire at you but remember to watch out if he lifts up his foot because he's about to stomp on you.
When you've hacked off the turrets on either side, you can continue to hit his feet to deal damage until you lower his health to nearly 0. When you have, get close to Ray and he'll try to smack you with one of his wings. Let him swing and then press the buttons as prompted on screen for a quick time event. These buttons in order are:
- Heavy/Activate
- rapidly tap Light
- rapidly tap Heavy
- rapidly tap Light
This will finish him off and complete these combat section.
Metal Gear Ray pt. 2
Very likely, Ray will start off by attack with a large Ray attack moving from left to right. Try to slide under this (Ninja Run and then Heavy attack) and then jump over the beam when it comes back from the other direction.
Ray will now start his normal attacks ranging from a turret attack similar to before (Ninja Run). He can also dig his face into the roof to attack which will deal massive damage. If he lowers his arm so that it spans the roof, he's going to shoot rockets from it which you have to destroy by using Blade Mode. Similarly, he can wind up with that arm and smash it into the ground. Finally, he can back up and shoot rockets at the roof which will dig into the ground and detonate after a certain period of time. You'll need to avoid the circles on the ground to avoid behing hit by them.
When Ray lowers his head or attacks with his face plates, avoid it and then attack his face to deal damage. It may take a couple of tries but you'll soon be prompted to activate Blade Mode (notice the character on the right side of the screen, this will be a hint to do this later in the game) and you'll be allowed to hack of Ray's face armor. Note that this will not prevent him from attacking with his face. After that, regular combat will continue and after dealing more damage, you'll be allowed to destroy one of the turrets.
Finally, after another round where you deal damage, Ray will back up and shoot a volley of rockets at you. Rather than entering Blade Mode, use Ninja Run to run across the rockets. When you get to the far side, you'll automatically enter Blade Mode and have to hack away on the armor on his right arm. Once you've cut through, Raiden will severe this arm.
Don't celebrate just yet because Ray isn't quite done yet. He'll toss you to the top of the tower. From here, you'll have to sprint down the side of the tower towards Ray but you'll have to be very careful because if you get hit by his Plasma ray then you'll die instantly.
Start off on the right side of the path until the first beam passes, then run between the pipes and stay in the middle for a moment. Wait until you pass the crater on the left and get to the left side. You'll need to try to avoid the middle because another beam will pass but watch out for rockets because you will likely see one come at you on this side. When you make it to the bottom, you'll finish Ray off.
