Chess Pieces are items dropped by enemies as loot and are actually Skill Points used to gain Skills to aid in your campaign. Sometimes they can also be found in chests.
In general, the harder the enemy the bigger piece they will drop and the more skill points you recieve. The only exception to this rule is when you are playing Mercenaries Mode in which the higher value pieces are often dropped when you achieve a higher combo chain.
