Mega Stones are items that are needed in order to Mega Evolve the respective Pokemon in battle, alongside the Mega Ring item (both are needed). Note that the Mega Stones are named after the Pokemon with -ite or -nite after it. The respective Pokemon will need to hold it to be able to Mega Evolve.
There are certain Mega Stones that can only be found at night. This isn't possible until after doing a few quests after defeating the Elite Four. You're only given an hour of real time (between 8PM and 9PM) to find them, which is done by finding sparkling spots on the ground. Note that you can change the time of the 3DS to 8PM to help searching for them all easily.
