I think I'll be getting the Xbox 720 because of having a 360 this gen. I'd say it makes things easier! Are you loyal to a manufacturer?

That all depends on the games on offer and the services that each company will provide. For example online users of the xbox must pay to use the service but the playstation network is free, and the xbox subscription is not exactly cheap. I have only just realised that it is in fact much better to buy the entire year upfront as a redeemable voucher (these can be found on ebay or Amazon) than the pay per month subscription.
A big issue for me would be the ability to play second hand games on the console, there were rumors that Microsoft did intend to prevent the resale of games but that may very well not be true. There are of course other minor difference that everybody has. I prefer the xbox controller to the playstation controller. It just 'feels' better.
But perhaps there will be a new console company that will steal the show such Steam with the Xi3 Corporation 'Piston'. bbc.co.uk/news/… -
It'd be hard to say really. I've always been ridiculous and purchased almost every console at some point (from as far back as the Master System. 3DO? Yes indeed). I'm not particularly loyal and I buy for a variety of reasons. For instance, I only just recently got a PS3 and that's specifically because I owned a PS2. What happened was that I never had an Xbox and skipped a generation so started by getting a 360 so I could go back and play the Xbox classics to catch up.
I'm all over the map. Pretty much the only thing I don't do are dedicated handhelds. I'll play games on my phone very rarely but I tend to hunch too much with handhelds and I stop playing pretty quickly. The only handheld games I ever really cared to play were Pokemon games. -
I've always been a bit of a Nintendo fan to be honest but I play my Xbox 360 much more than the Wii so I'd say tastes change over time. I did buy a PS1 just for Gran Turismo so I agree with the notion of the decision to buy being based around games rather than the manufacturer. -

These are some dedicated gamers - how do your setups compare to these?

Ha. Not even close. First off, wires are visible.
Second, Lo Fi in some cases.
Third, I don't consider a Tri-monitor setup the best thing ever unless it's three curved, edgeless OLED TVs inset in the wall.
Fourth, what kinda weak-ass speakers are these people using? If you're not rocking a 500W+ 5.1 or greater sound system, you're doing it wrong.
Last, that collection is pretty sick but it is a serious eyesore. -
The organized second one is the best. Second from the top. -
The bottom one is just insane, top one is awesome -

As part of an insider reveal - with numerous technical details on the Xbox 720 and PS4 spotted - a developer has claimed that the Xbox Next will be considerably more powerful than the PS4. The tech specs of both the PS4 and the Xbox 720 are quite telling...

I've heard the PS4 will be more powerful, but you can't believe much of anything until these machines are actually revealed by their respective companies. -
Not sure how much of this I believe to be honest

The next generation of Xbox hardware won't be quite as barn-storming an upgrade as Xbox 360 was over the original Xbox, BioWare's director of art and animation Neil Thompson has told OXM. It'll still be "quite a big leap", mind.

If by specs you mean more rumors? not really. I don't trust specs until NDAs have been lifted. -
Any thoughts on this now we have some specs revealed? -
I don't think that's even necessarily that it won't be quite the leap so much as it won't be a "noticeable leap". The biggest improvements in graphics these days are immersive and not necessarily just in textures, animations, etc. The shadow of your player character isn't what will improve but instead that of every other shadow in the game. That type of thing.
Reflections will be perfect, environments will be larger and special effects will be dramatically improved. These are far harder to quantify because they are the background of the game. But I suspect from a technical standpoint, these improvements will be maybe even four times what we saw in previous generations. -
