The Battle Frontier is located in western Kanto and it’s connects to Olivine City via Route 40 (It won’t unlock until you beat the elite four). The Frontier holds five different battle facilities each with their own rules and leaders (Frontier Brain) and other facilities. In the Frontier all your Pokemon are capped at level 50 (unless a facility lets you raise it) and many legendary Pokemon are banned from use. If you win at one the battle facilities you gain BP points which can be exchanged for a variety of things.
Battle Tower: This facility is a very simple knock out battle that acts just like a regular battle but without the use of non-held items. In this tower you can go singles where you use three Pokemon and doubles where you use two Pokemon and pick a partner from a group of NPCs who also has two Pokemon. Each time you do the Battle Tower there are seven battles you must go through, each time a battle ends your Pokemon are fully healed. The Frontier Brain Palmer is only challengeable in single battle; your first match with him is after 21 consecutive wins the second is after 49.
Battle Factory: In this facility you are given 3 random Pokemon to fight with after you win a battle, you will have a chance to exchange one of your Pokemon for a new one, but you won’t be able to see the status of the new Pokemon before trading. Also you the scientist will give you information on your opponents Pokemon, but the farther you go the less information you will receive. Like before you are able to do this in single or doubles and your Pokemon are healed after a battle also you can’t use items. Thorton the Frontier Brain is also given random Pokemon each battle, after you have 21 consecutive wins you may face him as well after 49.
Battle Arcade: This facility unlike others uses luck to weaken or strengthen one of the trainers. Before each battle you have to use the roulette which chooses what effects will be in placed in this battle and on whom. The possibilities for either you or opponent are: Lower HP, Poison, Freeze, Paralyze, Burn, Put to Sleep, Gets a Berry, Gets a Item and Level Up. The neutral possibilities are: Sunny weather, Rainy weather, Sandstorm weather, Hail weather, Fog weather, Trick Room conditions, Swap all Pokemon with opponent, Increase roulette speed, Decrease roulette speed, Randomize roulette’s flashes, Gain 1 BP, Gain 3 BP, Move to the next trainer and nothing . Also unlike most other battles you are able to see what Pokemon you opponent has before the start of the battle and your Pokemon can’t hold items. Like the others you must go through seven battles to complete a round and it’s open to both single and double battles. The Frontier Brain is Dahlia is challengeable after you win 21 consecutive battles and she is faceable again after 49 win streak.
Battle Castle: The Battle Castle has its own form of currency called CP which are gained by doing better in battle and are used on current benefits. Unlike the other facilities your Pokemon aren’t healed after battle, you can heal by using CP as well as numerous other things including renting held items to weakening opponents levels. In double battles each trainer keeps their own CP, but they are able to use the CP on their partners Pokemon. After you win 21 in a row you can challenge the Frontier Brain Darach and if you win 49 in a row you can challenge him again.
Battle Hall: The final facility has very different rules then the rest, in this facility you will only have one Pokemon (2 in double) and you must win 10 battles to earn the BP. Also your win streaks are connected to the Pokemon if you change the Pokemon the win streak will go back down to 0. After you select your Pokemon you will select one type your opponent’s Pokemon will be, their Pokemon could just be that type or a combo. Each time you win a battle the types rank will go up by one, when the rank hits 8-10 the Pokemon will have different types. The Frontier Brain Argenta like Thorton before her uses random Pokemon, you need a 50 win streak to fight her and a 170 to fight her again.
