Dante is a young man with no memory of his past other than the fact that he was an orphan. Escaping at a young age, he has spent year enjoying the good life with no question of who or what he is. After a night of debauchery, a woman comes knocking on Dante's door informing him that the demons have found him. Within minutes, a Hunter demon drags Dante into limbo, an alternate dimension connected to the city, and his journey begins.
As Dante makes his way through limbo the young woman, Kat, helps him get out and takes him to her boss Vergil, leader of the "terrorist" organization known as The Order.
Vergil explains that Dante is a Nepilium and the son of Sparda, a demon that fell in love with an angel named Eva, and his twin brother. The demon Mundus, believing there was only one child, wishes to hunt down and kill Dante to prevent his possible destruction in the future, as Nepilium are the only beings that have the ability to destroy demons.
