Far Cry 3 - Animals

Far Cry 3 features a living, breathing world and that means you will be encountering plenty of wildlife. There are two kinds of wildlife that you will be running into, which are harmless ones and ones that will attack you on sight. After you activate a Radio Tower, you will be able to see animal icons on your map. These are general locations for that particular animal, so if you're looking for one, you might need to widen your search a little bit. Also, note that only animals that you can skin are marked on your map, as there are other wildlife that can appear.

ASIAN BLACK BEAR

The Asian black bear has a distinct white chest and a reputation for being aggressive, making it the official mascot for Chinese New Year in the Castro.

Asian Bears are very dangerous animals, as they are capable of receiving and dealing a lot of damage. Note that you can tell when a bear has spotted and will come after you, as they will stand on its hind legs and roar. A sniper rifle shot to the head will most likely take one down instantly, and is ideal as you want to take them out from as far away as possible. Killing and skinning a bear will yield a Bear Hide.

ASIAN TAPIR

Tapirs are large, docile vegetarian mammals common on Rook Island. Sounds like the hippies back gome, except the Tapirs don't poop in my begonias, pardon my French.

As the in-game description says, Tapirs are docile and practically harmless creatures, making them very easy to hunt as they are also a little on the slow side.

BIRDS OF PARADISE

Although it is a wild animal, many island natives keep one or two in their homes as pets.  The bird come in many different colors, and those of more colorful varieties are prized as collectibles in Rook Island's communities.

Birds of Paradise are the birds you always see flying around the map, and come in a variety of different colors. They always fly away when you get close and don't really provide much of a benefit when you do manage to kill one, as you can't skin them and don't get any items as well.

BOAR

Hope you aren't kosher, because boars are the primary food source on Rook Island.

Boars, as with Tapirs and Pigs, are harmless creatures that are relatively easy to hunt and kill because they're on the slow side. You may think they would charge at you, but they don't.

BUFFALO

Buffalo are used by the Rakyat for everything from labor to milk and meat. They taste good, make excellent pack animals, and are even used as part of a dowry by more traditional Rook Island families, because a buffalo is forever (disclaimer: a buffalo's lifespan is 15 years).

Buffalo can be a tricky bunch, as you may think they are harmless, as they tend to run away at the first sign of gunfire. However, if you approach them normally, they will charge at you and knock you back with their heads, which can be especially dangerous if you're near a cliff.

BULL SHARK

Bull sharks are extremely common around Rook Island and live in both saltwater and freshwater. They also bear a striking resemblance to my ex's mother-in-law, but her two staples are vodka and gin.

Bull Sharks are the one reason you need to be careful while in the water, as you can't properly defend yourself due to not being able to use any weapons. You can usually see the shark's fin above the water, making it easy to spot where they are, although there is usually more than one in an area. They either attack you normally, or grab onto you initiating a quick-time event.

CASSOWARY

Cassowaries are rare flightless birds that Rook natives once traded as a valuable commodity. And that is probably the silliest sentence I have ever wrote.

Cassowaries might seem like harmless birds, but they can be one of the more dangerous animals in the game. They usually travel in packs of two or three and will attack you on sight if you get too close. The plus side is that they are pretty easy to kill.

CHICKEN

Chicken is chicken, you'd have to be from some backwater like Canada to not know what chicken is. And chicken is un-American. Us true patriots eat only 100% U.S.A. Kobe beef.

Chicken are similar to Birds of Paradise, as you will find them all over the game and they don't provide anything other than a small distraction, as you cannot skin them and they don't give you any items. Unlike a certain other game, you can attack them all you want without fear of retaliation.

CRAB

Don't eat the crab. Raw shellfish could kill you.

The crabs in the game are small and can be found in shallow waters and on beaches. As they're pretty small and don't give any items, it's best to just kill one for its entry in the Handbook and never bother again.

CROCODILE

Crocodiles are responsible for most of the animal-related deaths on Rook, because there's this coming-of-age ritual where young men have to tap a crocodile on the snout with a stick. Reminds me of Thursday nights with my ex-wife.

Crocodiles are the silent killer in the game, being that you'll likely not even see it before it latches onto you. If it does manage to get you, a small quick-time event will occur that requires you to mash a button that will result in one dead crocodile.

CROW

The Rakyat consider crows to be harbingers of misfortune, kind of like my sister-in-law.

There's not much to say about crows, as they are useless and really provide no benefit to even hunt down, other than the Handbook entry.

DEER

There was a time on Rook Island when deer were castly overhunted by the influx of European colonists. But then all the colonists went extinct and now the deer are once again plentiful.

Deer are harmless creatures that can be slightly challenging to hunt, as they will instantly run away if you get too close. It is best to hunt these at a distance, preferably with a sniper rifle or the bow.

DINGO

Rook's dingos are closer to dogs than their western counterparts, but they're still dingos are heart, kind of like reformed criminals or vegetarians.

Dingos are similar to Rabid Dogs, in that they hunt in packs of usually three or so. When they see you, they usually attack you until one is left, which will attempt to run away.

GALAPAGOS TORTOISE

The Galapagos tortoise is one of the largest species of tortoise in the world, basically a big, semi-stationary, stumpy creature. You know, like those kids who get their brains sucked out by the boob-tube. You don't know anyone like that, do you?

The Galapagos tortoises are the ones that you find on land, and they will retreat into their shells when you get close. They are easy prey, but only yield a Shell when killed, which is just good for selling (and it's not worth much).

GOAT

Goats have been on Rook Island for as long as people can remember and are used for food, clothing, and more. Islanders consider goat theft a serious offense and shun anyone who commits this crime. Goat loving, however, is condoned as long as you hoof it after. Get it? Hoof it? Come on, can't an old man have a little fun with animals?

Goats are generally harmless creatures that are usually found in groups of three or so. They will usually start running away if you get too close or start attacking them.

KOMODO DRAGON

The Komodo is a predator that preys on everything from birds to deer. Getting bitten by a Komodo dragon is both painful and dangerous due to the numerous septic pathogens found in their saliva, as opposed to the numerous septic pathogens found in my ex-wife's, which only result in temporary paralysis and not sweet merciful death.

Komodo Dragons can be very dangerous animals, as they are so low to the ground that it is hard to notice them sometimes. Where you find one, you'll usually find some more. They won't hesitate to attack you and can latch onto your arm or leg, prompting a quick-time event.

LEOPARD

Rook Island is a dangerous place, and if the pirates don't get you, the leopards will. These large felines are opportunistic hunters that will eat anything they can catch. Like construction workers at an all-you-can-eat buffet, or investment bankers.

Leopards are one of the more dangerous animals on the island, mostly just due to their very fast speed. If you can get the jump on them, do so and kill it quickly. Sometimes they have a habit of coming out of nowhere, and they can occasionally be seen chasing other animals like Deer.

MANTA RAY

Manta Rays are American animals. They're strong. They soar like eagles underwater. They're always on the go. And fish from third world countries clean their gills for no pay.

Manta Rays can be quite elusive, as they can usually be found swimming around the smaller islands. They are harmless and can be quite tough to kill, since you can't use weapons underwater, although the sniper rifle from land is one of few tactics that works. They don't yield any items, as they can't be skinned.

PIG

Pork is not nearly as popular as boar on Rook Island but pigs are much easier to take down. Just don't tell John McCain. He's been looking for pork for years and the man's hungry.

Pigs are harmless creatures, similar to Boars. You almost always will find them in groups of two or three and don't really run away from you unless you start attacking them.

RABID DOG

The dog population on this big rock is mostly infected with rabies; they've even made a local pact to shoot them on sight. If only I could get the same pact signed for my in-laws.

Rabid Dogs are similar to Dingos, in that they hunt in packs of at least three at a time. Also, they will usually attack you on sight until one is left, which will attempt to run away. Note that both pirates and privateers will also have dogs in their ranks.

SEA TURTLE

Locals hunt sea turtles for food and consider their eggs a delicacy. I am all in favor of genocide when it tastes delicious.

Sea Turtles, as its name suggests, are the turtles you find swimming in the water. When you find one, you will usually find a lot more. Like with the Galapagos tortoise, they will yield a Shell when skinned, which sells for a little money at shops.

SEAGULL

Every night I watch the skies from inside my bunker. They'll come back. If I watch they'll come. I can hear their voices from the sky. Calling out my name. There's the ridge. The guns in the jungle. Screaming. Smoke. The blood. All over my hands.

Seagulls aren't worth hunting down, as you will not likely see many of them throughout your adventures, and they don't yield anything of value.

SNAKE

There are few creatures Rook Island natives despise more than snakes. They are cpnsidered unclean and eating them is taboo. Rook Island snake venom was used by the CIA in the 1950s to extract secrets from Russian scientists and also as a good alternative to vermouth in martinis.

Snakes are similar to Crocodiles, in that by the time you see them, they will already be latched onto you. Unlike Crocs, though, there is no quick-time event involved in removing them, as Jason will automatically throw them to the ground. It seems that a snake will likely only attack you once and leave you alone afterwards.

SUMATRAN TIGER

As if Asian black bears, leopards and Dr. Earnhardt aren't enough, Rook Island is also home to Sumatran Tigers. These powerful felines have big appetites and are arguably the most dangerous predators on the island, excepting Buck, of course, who has an entirely different kind of appetites.

One of the most dangerous animals on Rook Island, Sumatran Tigers are fast and powerful. Also, they sometimes just seem to appear out of nowhere, either giving you a helping hand against pirates or being a hindrance and attacking you.

VULTURE

Whenever someone or something dies on Rook Island you can be sure to find a vulutre feasting on their remains.

If you see birds circling up in the air, it's Vultures and you can be sure there's a dead body around. When you spot one in the air, there's usually two more circling with it, as well as one or two on the ground picking at the body. They aren't worth killing, though, as they yield nothing of good value.
