Rare Animals are those that only exist when doing Path of the Hunter missions. They are nothing more than stronger versions of the regular animals you run into during your adventures.
ALBINO CROCODILE
An albino crocodile? Someone's just making this fellow up. No, my guidebook says it's real. I guess they're rare. Rarer than an Asian on network television.
The Albino Crocodile is part of the Path of the Hunter Quest that starts at the Bridge Control outpost. The location where the Albino Croc is has a few normal crocodiles, but the Albino Croc is easily distinguishable due to its lighter color. To complete the mission, you have to kill it with the Machete, which is only possible by going into the water with it and letting it grab you, then doing the quick time event.
BLACK PANTHER
The rare black panther that roams the island is said to be darker than night or Turkish back hair.
The Black Panther is part of the Path of the Hunter Quest that starts at X: 353.3, Y: 702.1. This rare animal requires the use of a bow to kill it, and there is one other leopard in the area. It takes about 4 arrows to kill it, and the problem is the Black Panther is fast, so it might be best to take shots from farther away.
BLOOD KOMODO
One of the most disturbing creatures on Rook Island is a komodo dragon with a strange defect that causes its saliva to run red like blood. I'm calling it now, this will become the next sensational house pet when people get bored of pythons.
The Blood Komodo is the target of the Path of the Hunter Quest that starts at the Cliffside Overlook outpost. When you get to the spot where it is located, you will find that there are a few normal Komodo Dragons in the vicinity. You need to kill the Blood Komodo with the bow, so it will take a good number of arrows to finally put it down.
GOLDEN TIGER
Few animals are more rare, or more dangerous, than a golden Sumatran tiger. The hide of this creature will sell faster than the Russian government.
The Golden Tiger is the target of the Path of the Hunter Quest that begins at the Mosquito Yard outpost. There are a few problems with this hunt, because there is plenty of foliage in the way, as well as normal tigers around the area and the fact you need to kill it with a bow. However, the Golden Tiger is lighter in color, so you will know it when you see it. It is fairly fast and definitely powerful, but there are ways around that.
MANEATER
Rook fisherman speak of a bull shark with a taste for human flesh. None who set out to catch it were seen again, but one man did manage to get a hook into the monster's mouth before being slowly devoured. Probably should have stayed in bed that day.
The Maneater shark is the target of the Path of the Hunter Quest that starts at the Kell's Boat Repairs outpost. This is a troubling hunt at first because you need to kill it with a bow, which is a problem as you can't use weapons underwater. That means you'll need a boat to use as a platform. Identifying the Maneater is a little bit of a problem, but it is darker than normal sharks.
ONE HORN
I've heard about a native buffalo so fierce that it rammed a tiger, causing one of its horns to brake off and embed itself into the shocked feline. Talk about overkill.
The One Horn is the target of the Path of the Hunter Quest that begins at the Camp Murder outpost. You can easily distinguish this animal from the rest of the buffalo, due to it only having one horn. You have to kill it using a shotgun, which shouldn't be hard at all.
UNDYING BEAR
There are rumors of a large bear on Rook Island that cannot be killed. Some say it is covered with scars from those who have tried to kill it...and failed. Others claim the scars come from eczema. You be the judge.
The Undying Bear is part of the Path of the Hunter Quest that starts in the Cradle Gas outpost. Unlike the other rare animals, the Undying Bear is alone and usually hiding in the cave. You have to kill the bear with a shotgun, which isn't too hard as long as you're close enough, although 2-3 hits will likely kill you.
WHITE BELLY TAPIR
So there's this tapir that has a large white patch on his lower body. Not going to get into how I know that, but it involves Cuban rum and just a little bit of mescaline. Anyway, kill it so I can try to forget.
The White Belly Tapir is the target of the Path of the Hunter Quest that starts at the Rust Yard outpost. It looks like a normal tapir, but it has a white belly instead. It can be a little hard to find considering its size, as well as having to kill it using the bow, but the fact it doesn't attack you at all makes it easy.
YELLOW NECK
According to my bird book, cassowaries have multicolored necks and attack people when approached. Sounds like my mother-in-law. Anyway, a cassowary with a yellow neck is the rarest, bagging this one will net you respect and possibly candy that tastes like chalk.
The Yellow Neck is a special cassowary that is the target of the Path of the Hunter Quest that begins at the AM 12 outpost. This is one of the easier animals to hunt, since you are required to use a sniper rifle. There are other cassowaries in the area, but this one has a yellow neck, although it's easy to just keep shooting until you hit this one.
