The Night Light is a special light created using the Shadow Manipulator. There are few benefits to this type of light other than that the base doesn't disappear and is smaller than a Fire Pit. However, this is little consolation considering that standing too close to it will cause you to lose Sanity and that it requires Nightmare Fuel as fuel. That isn't to say that it isn't useful since you may find yourself in a situation (particularly underground) where Nightmare Fuel may be far more available than wood.
