The Mandrake is one of the best food sources in the game but only 5-6 ever exist in a world. Collecting them can be tough because at night, they'll follow you around instead of being collected. This makes it necessary to collect them during the day while they are sleeping.
When cooking or eating a Mandrake (even after cooking it), it will knock out the player and all creatures around you until the beginning of the next cycle. This means that day will turn to dusk, dusk into night, or night into day which can be dangerous if you don't already have a fire set up nearby. It does allow you to bypass the night without using a Straw Roll or Tent.
Alternatively, the Mandrake can be used in a Crock Pot to make Mandrake Soup. This doesn't really provide much of a benefit since the result is almost identical to a cooked Mandrake except for the +5 to Sanity. However, cooking the Mandrake in this manner nor eating the Mandrake soup will cause the knock out effect.
