Dark Petals come from Evil Flowers which appear naturally in the woods but also frequently by any of the 5 Things. There's little benefit to picking Evil Flowers most of the time but if you need Nightmare Fuel then they are both a great way of lowering your Sanity (which will bring out Beardlings) or four of them can be refined using a Science Machine to make some.
