The Shadow Manipulator is a step up from the Alchemy Engine and once built requires no other Science Machines. It allows certain larger structures and advanced weapons to be prototyped. One of these should be built and maintained at your settlement until all items have been prototyped from it. This will allow you to build these items without the Shadow Manipulator and so one will not be required.
