The Science Machine is the most basic of the Science Machines. It allows certain basic tools to be prototyped (such as the Shovel) and it allows the refining of materials to allow for more complex constructions. One of these should be built and maintained at your settlement until a better Science Machine (such as the Alchemy Engine and Shadow Manipulator) or all items have been prototyped from it. This will allow you to build these items without the Science Machine and so one will not be required.
