The Divining Rod can be both important and unimportant. The Divining Rod will help you locate the five Things and the Maxwell Gate. As you move around, the Divining Rod will tell of the proximity of the nearest of these items (though it won't tell you which it is). The necessity of this is dependent on how you want to play. However, if you seek to leave the World that you are in then this would help quite a bit.
