Corvo gains supernatural powers when he mysteriously gets The Outsider's mark on his left hand during his first visit to The Hound Pits, although he may meet others who share similar abilities like his. In order to learn new powers, one must acquire Runes; the more powerful the power, the more Runes that are required. Runes can also be used to improve the abilities. It is not possible to learn all powers in a single playthrough, as there aren't enough Runes that can be gathered.
These supernatural powers require spiritual essence, or Mana, in order to be used. Corvo will always have enough Mana to at least use Blink once. Mana can be replenished by using the Piero's Spiritual Remedy item.
