The game opens up with a cinematic, showing various scenes from the game. Once it's over, you'll be in the city of Motorville, which is Oliver's hometown. He goes to pick up some groceries and when he goes outside, his friend calls him over. Use the left analog stick to walk over to him and press X when you see the face above Phil to talk to him.
When the conversation is over, you'll need to make your way home, which is marked on your map with a star icon. Press R1 to bring up a map of the area, then start going to the star. You can talk to other people if you want, but there's nothing else here to do. Once you get home, another cutscene will play out.
After you gain control of Oliver again, it will be nighttime and you'll gain access to the main menu. There's not much there yet, but you can fiddle around with the options and save your game by pressing Start, so do that now. Exit your house and make your way to Phil's garage, where yet another cutscene will occur. When you gain control, head to the next star marker, where a cutscene with some little girl will occur.
Once all of the events play out, Oliver's mother ends up dead and the stuffed animal she gave him will come to life. Its name is Drippy and he comes from another world, saying that it might be possible to bring Oliver's mother back by going to his world. Go downstairs and check the fireplace, where you'll find the Wizard's Companion, a spellbook that will help you get to Drippy's world.
After a short explanation, you will need to write your name in the book to make a pledge. It doesn't matter what your name is, so just put any down. You will now need a wand in order to get to the other world. Once outside, just follow Drippy a few times, talking to him, then make your way to the star marker to find the wand.
You will need some place big and spacious in order to cast the spell to get to the other world, so start making your way to the town's square. Once you arrive, you will cast Gateway, which allows you to travel in between worlds.
