Commander Shepard
The protagonist of the series. He or she can have a range of different backgrounds and personalities. Shepard captains the Normandy, an Alliance space cruiser. Shepard became the first human Spectre in history during Mass Effect, and was key in the destruction of Sovereign, a Reaper, and his forces when they attacked the Citadel at the end of the game. Shepard was presumed dead after his ship was destroyed at the beginning of Mass Effect 2, but Cerberus managed to revive and enlist him, and he went on to assemble a team to destroy the Collectors, a race created by the Reapers from dead Protheans, who had been abducting humans.
In Mass Effect 3, pardoned of the crime of working with Cerberus, he is tasked with forming a galactic army to defeat the Reapers once and for all. He sees a little boy die when he is escaping from Earth, and has recurring nightmares for the rest of the game. He visits the leaders of each race in turn and helps them with their issues so that they can lend their full support to the war effort against the Reapers. He is determined to save Earth, and must literally scour the galaxy for resources to be able to do so. Shepard makes the final decision on how to deploy the Crucible and eliminate the Reaper threat – by destroying all synthetic life, controlling the Reapers or fusing synthetics and organics into a new form of life. It is implied that he survives if the Renegade ending is chosen, but is otherwise killed.
Male Shepard is voiced by Mark Meer, and female Shepard by Jennifer Hale.
-
Garrus Vakarian
A Turian officer working at Citadel Security in the original Mass Effect, and one of only two characters to be a teammate in all three games. In Mass Effect 2, he was found working as a mercenary on Omega and recruited once again.
If he survives Mass Effect 2, in Mass Effect 3, he joins Shepard from a moon of Palaven, the Turian homeworld, where he was helping to fight the Reaper armies, and where Shepard was recruiting the Turian Primarch. He has become a powerful figure in the Turian military, largely thanks to his first-hand experience with fighting Reapers. He remains on the Normandy for the rest of the game, and is a potential love interest for a female Shepard or for Tali’Zorah if neither Garrus nor Tali is romanced by Shepard. He enjoys joking with Joker, and bragging about his achievements with James Vega. He and Shepard can spend some quality time together on the Citadel and have a target shooting competition. If the Effective Military Strength is too low, he is killed by Harbinger during the final push, if he is a squadmate at the time.
Garrus is voiced by Brandon Keener.
-
Ashley Williams
Ashley Williams is a human soldier who was assigned to help Shepard in the original Mass Effect. Either she or Kaidan Alenko is left behind to die on Virmire, so that the others can escape. From this point onwards, she and Kaidan have very similar storylines. She is pleasantly surprised to see Shepard on Horizon in Mass Effect 2, but refuses to work with Cerberus.
She is met again on Earth in Mass Effect 3 and becomes a squadmate. She is critically injured on Mars, and spends the next few missions in Huerta Memorial Hospital on the Citadel, where she can be visited, and where she is offered Spectre status. She is assigned to guard the ambassadors during the Cerberus attack on the Citadel, but does not know of Udina’s treachery. Shepard can be forced to kill Ashley at this point, but if she survives, she can rejoin Shepard’s team or remain behind as a war asset. Ashley can be romanced by a male Shepard. If the Effective Military Strength is too low, she is killed by Harbinger during the final push, if she is a squadmate at the time.
Ashley is voiced by Kimberly Brooks.
-
Liara T'soni
An Asari research scientist found and enlisted by Commander Shepard in the original Mass Effect. She was a companion and potential love interest for the Commander in the original game, but had relocated to Ilium, an Asari world, and become an information broker before Mass Effect 2. In the expansion Lair of the Shadow Broker, she defeated the Shadow Broker, a galactic information broker, and took his place.
In Mass Effect 3, she is found on Mars, researching Prothean data, and becomes a squadmate. She can be a love interest for either gender, regardless of whether she was romanced in Mass Effect. Liara provides the Alliance with advice on how to assemble the Crucible, from her deep knowledge of the Protheans, and creates a time capsule which includes everything they have discovered about the Crucible in case the Reapers wipe out all current sentient races. She remains on the Normandy throughout the game. She is killed by Harbinger if the Effective Military Strength is too low and she is a squadmate at the time, and this is the only time in the series that she can die.
Liara is voiced by Ali Hillis.
-
Tali'Zorah nar Rayya
A Quarian engineer, with the Migrant Fleet. One of only two characters to be a teammate in all three games. In Mass Effect, she is found on her Pilgrimage, a mission to take something of use back to the Migrant Fleet. In Mass Effect 2, she was met whilst on a mission to rescue a fellow Quarian, and enlisted later. Depending on the actions of Shepard, she was exiled from the Fleet or promoted to Admiral. She can die during the attack on the Collector ship.
If she survives, she is working with the Quarians to defeat the Reaper threat in Mass Effect 3, either in secret or openly. She is happy to join the Normandy, and is a potential love interest for a male Shepard. If neither she nor Garrus is romanced, they begin a relationship together. Her real face, without a mask, can be seen in a picture after she and Shepard make love. If the Quarian fleet is destroyed, she commits suicide. Otherwise, she becomes Quarian ambassador to the Citadel, but remains a potential squadmate until the end. She is killed by Harbinger if the Effective Military Strength is too low and she is a squadmate at the time.
Tali’Zorah is voiced by Ash Sroka.
-
Kaidan Alenko
Kaidan Alenko is a human Sentinel and biotic who is assigned to work with Shepard in the original Mass Effect. Either he or Ashley Williams is left to die on Virmire to allow the others the opportunity to escape with their lives. From this point onwards, he and Ashley have very similar storylines. If he survives, he meets Shepard on Horizon in Mass Effect 2, and is furious at him for working with Cerberus, refusing to work with him to stop the Collectors.
He rejoins Shepard in Mass Effect 3, and is brought to Mars to secure the Prothean data, but is seriously injured and spends the next few missions in Huerta Memorial Hospital on the Citadel, where he can be visited by Shepard. He is promoted to Spectre at this time. He is assigned to guard the ambassadors during the Cerberus attack on the Citadel, but does not know of Udina’s treachery. Shepard can be forced to kill Kaidan at this point, but if he survives, he can rejoin Shepard’s team or remain behind as a war asset. Although he could only be romanced by a female Shepard in Mass Effect, a Shepard of either gender can have a relationship with him in Mass Effect 3. If the Effective Military Strength is too low, he is killed by Harbinger during the final push, if he is a squadmate at the time.
Kaidan is voiced by Raphael Sbarge.
-
EDI
EDI is an Artificial Intelligence created by Cerberus to help pilot the Normandy in Mass Effect 2. During the Collector attack on the ship, she is granted full control of the Normandy’s systems by Joker. By the end of the game, she is fully loyal to Shepard.
After the mission on Mars in Mass Effect 3, she occupies the body of Dr Eva Coré, a robot in the service of the Illusive Man. From this point onwards, she is a squadmate. If she is encouraged, she begins a romantic relationship with Joker, who goes from being hostile towards her, to tolerant, and finally to loving. In the final cutscene, during the Control or Synthesis endings, she can be seen walking with Joker, looking more human if the Synthesis ending was chosen. She is not visible during the Destroy ending, which implies that she was destroyed together with all other synthetics, though this is never expressly confirmed.
EDI is voiced by Tricia Helfer.
-
James Vega
James Vega is a human soldier working with the Alliance who is assigned to Shepard’s team during Mass Effect 3, his first appearance in the series. He is initially displeased to be leaving Earth, but realises that it is for the greater good. If Shepard talks to Vega, he eventually reveals that most of his squad was killed whilst he was defending humans against a Collector attack. He sacrificed much of the colony to gather vital intel, and he feels guilty about this, particularly because Shepard defeated the Collectors and the intel was not needed. Vega is seen getting a tattoo on the Citadel, and reveals that he has been selected for the N7 program; Shepard can either congratulate him or scold him for this. If the Effective Military Strength is too low, he is killed by Harbinger during the final push, if he is a squadmate at the time.
Vega is voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr.
Enemies

The Illusive Man
A shadowy figure who leads the human supremacist terrorist organisation Cerberus. He was the first to consider the Collector threat. After paying an enormous amount to revive Shepard, he enlisted Shepard’s help in Mass Effect 2.
He believes that the Crucible can be used to control the Reapers, and so opposes the Alliance’s efforts to assemble it and use it to destroy them. This makes his organisation one of the game’s main antagonists. He orders an attack on the Citadel to damage galactic unity. It is revealed that the Illusive Man is actually under Reaper indoctrination and is merely serving the Reapers’ wishes, but he refuses to accept this idea. He reaches the Citadel along with Anderson and Shepard at the end of the game, and makes one last plea to Shepard to attempt to control the Reapers before he is killed.
The Illusive Man is voiced by Martin Sheen.

David Anderson
Admiral Anderson is a highly acclaimed commander and soldier in the Systems Alliance armed forces. After excellent performance on the field, he was promoted to Captain and given the Normandy, a ship which he later relinquished to Commander Shepard. Anderson then remained on the Citadel to aid the Ambassador, Donnel Udina.
In Mass Effect 3, he is on Earth for Shepard’s court-martial hearing, and he remains on Earth to co-ordinate a resistance against the Reaper threat, occasionally giving Shepard advice through long-range communication. He is a squadmate during the prologue, but is not seen again in person until Shepard meets him during the final mission in London. They both reach the Citadel, and Anderson makes a plea to Shepard to ignore the Illusive Man and destroy the Reapers before dying of his wounds whilst watching Earth.
Anderson is voiced by Keith David.

Jeff "Joker" Moreau
Jeff Moreau is the pilot of the Normandy, Commander Shepard’s ship, in all three Mass Effect games. He suffers from Vrolik’s Syndrome, which leaves his bones brittle and makes walking difficult. Despite this, he is a highly skilled and highly commended pilot. He often makes wisecracks, but can also be sensitive. He is happy to work with Cerberus during Mass Effect 2, in part because they designed an entirely new Normandy S2, and allowed him to pilot it. During Mass Effect 2, he granted EDI full control of the Normandy to save it from Collector attack, and since then has had feelings for her.
Joker was arrested along with Shepard for working with Cerberus, but acquitted of all charges and assigned to continue as pilot of the Normandy, which had been re-outfitted by the Alliance. If encouraged, he pursues a relationship with EDI, the ship’s AI, who occupies a robotic body near the beginning of the game. If the Effective Military Strength is high enough, he and EDI survive and are seen walking together in the final cutscene. He has green lines across his skin if Synthesis is chosen, but still walks with a limp.
Joker is voiced by Seth Green.
