The magnum is a returning weapon in the franchise. It has seen a number of modifications over that time frame but usually it's most identifiable feature is its zoom capability. The Magnum frequently has a zoom feature providing it greater accuracy over medium range distances.
In Halo 4, the Magnum has a 2x zoom scope fed directly to the Spartan's visor. It has a rather high rate of fire and a suprising amount of power. While the weapon CAN be used at a medium range, it's far more effective at close range because it has a lot of recoil that requires you to shoot very slowly when zoomed for it to be particularly effective.
At closer ranges, it is usually capable of pulling down an enemies shields in roughly four to five shots. Because the Magnum is considered a precision weapon, it can then get a headshot to finish the enemy. While it doesn't have the shield stripping ability of the Assault Rifle, when used with quick shots at close range to bring down shields and then one precise head shot, it can easily be the most deadly weapon at close range.
