The Mortar is similar to modern mortars in a lot of ways. It is used to propel a shell high into the air and then down behind high enemy defenses. It is generally used as support for infantry by pinning down or flushing out enemies in cover. On it's return, the bomb splits into a group of smaller bombs that carpet an area, making it effective for large groups of enemies. While it is not specifically designed for heavy bombardment of fortifications, it's payload is sometimes powerful enough to destroy certain weak structures.
The Mortar has a crank jack mechanism. When the first button is held, the player turns a crank which begins to elevate the mortar. Upon release, the mortar fires at whatever angle it has achieved. This means that aiming is a matter of holding down the fire button until the appropriate time. It is difficult to master the mortar over long ranges but most maps are small enough and the mini bombs spread enough that to hit most targets requires a minimum amount of time. However, when mastered, it can be used effectively over hills to hit distant enemies that are beyond your line of sight.
