The Hearthfire DLC allows you to purchase up to three plots of land in the holds of Hjaalmarch, Falkreath, or The Pale. Each of these pieces of land offers varying environments (even if the houses are similar). This means that choosing your land should be based on the location, atmosphere, and neighboring inhabitants (for instance, the property in Falkreath isn't far from Giants).
The Lakeside Manor in Falkreath is nestled in the small mountain range just north of Falkreath. The area is heavily wooded. It's not far from Giants and it's proximity to a mountain means that it's not uncommon to be attacked by a Dragon here. It does have access to both an Iron Vein and Corundum Vein as well as a pond and lake. Be sure to watch out for the Necromancer's alter just to the east of your home.
Windstad in the Hjaalmarch is actually a rather cold and snowy area. The House sits just above the swamps and ocean giving it a rather nice view. This location is probably the most peaceful with the closest pests being some Horkers out in the water. If you get a Fish Hatchery, however, this should block them from your property.
The last property in the Pale is called Heljarchen Hall. This is not quite as hostile as the Lakeside manor but does still have a Giant Camp not far. It's in an interesting location situated at the southern edge of the Pale. If you stand at your front door, you'll be snowed on while looking over a large grassy field. This is a great location to explore from.
